RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association Recognizes Outstanding Contributions to the Family Building Community
(McLean, VA, August 29, 2011) – RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association is pleased to announce that SELF Magazine will be honored with the 2011 Hope Award for Achievement for the profound effect the article “This Woman Has a Secret” had and continues to have on the lives of people diagnosed with infertility. Members of the creative team behind the article will accept the award at RESOLVE’s Night of Hope Gala on September 13, 2011 at Guastavino’s in New York City. As the organization that supports and provides a voice for people diagnosed with infertility, RESOLVE established the Hope Awards to recognize professionals, companies, volunteers and the media who have demonstrated innovation and compassion to benefit people struggling with infertility.
In August 2010, SELF published the groundbreaking article “This Woman Has a Secret” about infertility, giving the disease the exposure needed to begin an honest and public dialogue. The article described infertility as a silent epidemic: Women and their partners often conceal their fertility issues from their closest friends and even their family—nearly two-thirds of those who seek treatment admit to doing so in secret. “This Woman Has a Secret” went on to address the consequences of this ongoing secrecy: Without openness, there is little financial or governmental support for this patient community.
SELF is a trusted brand devoted to helping women achieve total well-being. Reaching 6.7 million readers in print, and millions more on ten distinct platforms, SELF is an authoritative source, strategist, cheerleader and life coach, guiding like-minded women to make informed, inspired and intelligent decisions to reach their most personal goals: to be fitter, healthier, happier and ultimately present their best selves to the world. Creative Credits on “This Woman Has a Secret” include Jennifer Wolff Perrine, Writer; Sara Austin, Features Director (Health & News); Patricia Singer, Research Director; Lauren Purcell, Executive Editor; and Lucy S. Danziger, Editor-in-Chief, with whom the story idea originated.
“RESOLVE is delighted to recognize SELF Magazine for its intelligent and compassionate coverage of infertility and for uncovering the vast and long term consequences to the entire community of dealing with this disease in secrecy,” said Barbara Collura, RESOLVE’s Executive Director. “The Night of Hope is a special opportunity to come together and thank all those who work tirelessly to improve the lives of the 7.3 million women and men in the U.S. facing infertility.”
The 14th Annual Night of Hope attracts more than 300 leaders and influencers in the family building community. Past Hope Award recipients include The TODAY Show, The View, Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute and Church & Dwight, makers of First Response®.
