RESOLVE Advocacy Day Travel Information

We've put together some information to help you plan your trip to Washington, DC.  As the city is a popular destination for tourists throughout the spring and summer, we suggest booking your plans as soon as possible!

Neighborhood information:

The Washington, D.C. metropolitan area covers a wide area including Northern Virginia, Washington, D.C and southern Maryland. These areas are accessible by train or bus.

Airport Information

There are three airports in the Washington, DC Area:

Train Information

Union Station, which is located on Capitol Hill, can be reached via Amtrak as well as the MARC (MD) and VRE (VA) commuter trains. Union Station is also serviced by the red line of the Washington Metro (Washington’s subway system).

Bus Information

Greyhound and Peter Pan Bus Lines have routes to Washington, D.C. Other commercial Bus Lines may have routes to Washington, D.C. Please check with your local bus company for more information.

Parking

For those of you who live or will be staying in the DC area, we strongly suggest using public transportation whenever possible. Street parking is extremely limited, particularly in the morning. You may also park at Union Station for up to 12 hours for $17.

Tax Deductible Costs

According to the IRS website, generally, you can claim a tax deduction for travel expenses incurred while you are away from home performing services for a charitable organization only if there is no significant element of personal pleasure, recreation, or vacation in the travel.

Deductible travel expenses include:

  • Air, rail, and bus transportation 
  • Out-of-pocket expenses for your car 
  • Taxi fares or other costs of transportation between the airport or station and your hotel 
  • Lodging costs 
  • The cost of meals

Ideas on how to save money for your Advocacy Day trip:

  • find someone to share a hotel room by connecting with other Advocacy Day participants on the Advocacy Board in the RESOLVE Online Community
  • ask your local family building professional to sponsor your trip 
  • ask co-workers, family and friends to donate miles, points, etc.
